Daily Quote 01/11/05

January 11th, 2005 by Dave

“I’ve been using the computer for so long, and command-Z works for undo in all the software programs. So whenever I find something in my life that I want to undo, I reach for the command-Z keys and I find it weird that it doesn’t work.”

– Lisa Hoffman, graphic designer, who probably spends too much time at work.

Did you ever spend a while playing a video game, then go around thinking you’re still in the game? Maybe you should unplug for a while and read. Try, for example, this Wired article about the phenomenon and see just how often this happens.

I don’t think this happens with books, but I could be wrong. Personally, I know I’ve never grabbed someone’s head and tried to flip to their index after spending a day reading. Have you?

Was it you that said you remembered the video game commands to kill a character in Mortal Kombat from years ago?

I wish people had footnotes; after you know so much about someone, though, you know what would be in them anyway, and nothing is irrational.

    Example:
John: Hey, Bob, how’s it going?
Bob: I feel like a pink rock in a fishbowl.*

    * Bob as a child had a fish bowl with a single pink rock that the fish would continually suck up and then spit out. Apply this knowledge as you will to Bob’s choice of words to describe his current emotional state.

Note, however, that without the footnote, (explanation of Bob’s reference) you might think that he was making schizophrenic loose associations.
There IS sufficient reason for everything, and free will is simply nonexistent.
And minimum wage laws DO create more unemployment, and gambling IS everywhere; but who really cares?
