The sincerest flattery

April 29th, 2005 by Dave

Does Wynn Las Vegas point the way to the future? Lloyd Fonvielle doesn’t think so, but I beg to differ. I predict that most of the casinos built in the next 10-15 years will try, on one level or another, to emulate Wynn. It’s starting already, for places that have only vauge plans.

Check out, for example, the Cascada Resort - A Future Luxury Resort in Las Vegas | scherf.com.

The Cascada, from their site

So is putting a pitch together as easy as tweaking the city’s most recognizable hotel tower, scaling down the water feature, putting a model next to your pool, and posting it the web? Maybe, but these people seem to have bigger things in mind: owning the very idea of a curved building.

This project doesn’t even have a casino, at least not conceptually:

The Cascada, whenever it will be build, will be one of the most luxurious resorts in the world. With its captivating design, the vast array of well-planned amenities, and the thousands of exceptional features and details will make the Cascada a very special place on earth. Combining tastefully the lavish splendor of the good old times with the conveniences and advantages of futuristic high-tech gear and elements throughout this property. The Cascada will not only be a great place to visit, but it will be a great place to live. Whenever the financial means are in place, the first Cascada resort will be located in Las Vegas, Nevada. Initially, there are no plans to feature a casino at the Cascada, although based on various suggestions an option for a classic Monte Carlo-style casino is available and could be considered depending on the demands and requirements of the financiers. On this page you’ll find some interesting information about the exciting Cascada project.

You’ve got to read this section: Wynn Las Vegas - a luxury resort inspired by Dietmar Scherf’s Cascada design

It seems to imply that they might sue Wynn for taking their “trademarked” curved building. They might have a point: it’s entirely possible that Wynn got the idea for his signature resort from a website that sells discount guitars.

Since the page is copyright 1997, is this really new?
It’s obviously written by someone who has very good English ability, but it’s not native to them. I think if this were entirely serious, it would have been checked against a native speaker.

For example, ‘build’ instead of ‘built’ in the first sentence. Then, the awkward ‘Combining tastefully’, instead of the more natural for US English, ‘Tastefully combining’.

Finally, it says it will be built in Vegas, but with no casino planned.

It’s further odd in that they don’t seem to specify that it’s a hotel or a condo. I certainly can’t tell….

How can you copyright something from the Universal Unconscious?
