I think the problem is when the imagineers are overridden by the bookkeepers and lawyers. As in the field of humour, the more politically correct (safe) you are the less funny you also are. Artists go with their gut, accountants go with the bottom line resulting in safe (dull) investments which generally don't survive long (except for "Friends", personally I couldn't get past the advertisements to actually watch a show). I prefer the adventurous CBC/BBC attitude of "What the hell, let's see if it flies!" in my life. I was very disappointed with the close of the Star Trek Experience. My friend and I had a excellent time "experiencing" it all and looked foreward to seeing it again on our next trip to Vegas. Friends we recommended it to were also disappointed to see it gone when they visited Vegas. I hope Vegas doesn't forget that part of what it is selling is fantasy (and you can't get it any where else)...I can shop and gamble at home anytime (we have a world class casino here) but I can't do it with a Greek god and thunder bolts flashing over me. That's why I travel to Vegas. Now is not the time for Vegas promoters to be "safe". Now is the time to "Seek new worlds, to boldly go where no one has gone before" and realize that maybe the immediate gratification is not the one that will last or provide the best investment in the long run.

Wow, what an analogy!

The original was the perfect storm of great writing, perfect actors and the cultural tenor of the times.

To the extent that when the original aired there were fewer competing tv shows it was able to catch more of entertainment market. Additionally, the space race was center/front in the national and world consciousness.

By the time the TNG came along the entertainment market was more competitive.

With the rise of gaming in other areas of the country (both Indian Country and commercial venues) now entertainment gaming market is diluted as well.

Your ANALOGY is very STRONG. (Shatner's voice)
