Lot's to talk about here. Regardless of how you feel about Gov. Christie we must admit that he has guts! I do not think any governor has been so bold in re-shaping (or attempting to re-shape) the industry since it was created. You have to give the man credit for that. Like in any business, AC will never succeed with out re-inventing itself, its message etc. You think Apple would still be successful if it was still issuing its first addition of the Ipod? Swift and bold change must be brought to that town in order for it to survive and while I certainly do agree with Dr Dave that the "devil is in the details" I am glad that someone has finally stepped up to the podium to finally present them rather than ignore them.

[...] Die is Cast dissects the plan item by item. Overall, there is some excellent perspective on the reality of Chris Christie’s plan for Atlantic City. In a nutshell, this means: no more subsidy for the racetracks; no slots at racetracks; no interstate Internet gambling; no sports betting. [...]

Michael,

The city will still get the tax revenue from the casinos. Only now, they can concentrate on the area of their responsibility, the neighborhoods. If the state is taking care of the casino district, the neighborhoods should thrive as well. If not, you know the state will be watching what the city does and how it spends its money.

And FoolsGold "amusement parks, sport fishing charter boats, etc.'... Ain't no casino destination on the east coast that has these kinds of things. So if you want the whole package, AC will be the only place to go.

Its also a bit of "too little too late". Even if a miracle occurs and all the crack houses disappear overnight and are replaced with neat trim white picked fences, why should "the masses" flock to Atlantic City again. The gamblers already can get to the casinos if they want to. The Non-Gaming-Revenue-Generators are a pie in the sky dream, but even they become reality who will patronize them? Lets say overnight there is a plethora of amusement parks, sport fishing charter boats, etc. Why trek all the way to Atlantic City?

It's an interesting plan, but the whole "city in a city" thing just doesn't make sense to me. Yes, the city government is corrupt, and yes, the city is perceived as unsafe to the point where people feel like they can't walk more than a block from the boardwalk.

However, after this takeover, the city government will still be corrupt and the area one block away from the boardwalk will still belong to that city government. Only now, the city will have less money to spend without the tax revenue from all the casinos, restaurants, and other businesses on the boardwalk. How will that help?

The best part about this plan is that it IS a plan! For so many years there has been no plan to do what needed to be done: make AC a destination resort. This time, I feel there is a chance.
